We recently spoke with Bud Garett, founder and owner of the Refinery Hair Salon. Here is what he had to share for our Zukin Realty Commercial Business Spotlight.

The Refinery Hair Studio has been open for over nine years.  What sets you apart from other salons?

Well…I think if I have a superpower, it’s attracting good people. I’ve been surrounded by some of the best since opening our doors. Through ups and downs, it’s the people who remain, both employees and clients alike. I instinctively want to give people the best of myself, make them feel good, and–obviously–look good. We don’t take ourselves too seriously, as we’re grounded in the people who surround us daily. That’s why our logo has an anchor. It is a symbol that reminds us to check our egos and celebrate the day with those around us. And simply have fun and enjoy the day in a warm and inviting environment. There’s simply an energy that you can feel when you walk into our salon.

How did you attract such an eclectic team of stylists?

What our team brings to the table as creatives is a huge part of our success. It is the foundation of why all our stylists became stylists. There are many talented stylists, and we have some of the best. Many salons sort of ‘require’ their stylists to double book. We don’t do that at the Refinery. I don’t force any of our stylists to double-book. Other studios will have stylists booked during another client’s coloring hours. Or, purposely slip several men’s haircuts in between. They think, “It’s just 15 minutes!” That became the new standard when I worked for other studios, and that’s just not how we manage our bookings. Simply spending more time and focusing on our clients as individuals produces a better experience for our clientele and a better all-around service. Customers choose us for our expertise and the experience they receive when they walk into our studio. A phrase I always say to my own children is that in music, notes are equally important as the space between notes. Thus, that ‘break’ between clients is vital. It makes people feel relaxed. This is also a goal of mine when it comes to my staff. I have often stated that I want the most psychologically healthy workspace. You can only achieve that when there is a calm between the storms. The bottom line is that you have to fill your own cup before you can fulfill the needs of others. This commitment to a psychologically healthy workspace is not just a statement; it’s a passion I strive to uphold daily.

The Refinery has some genuinely fantastic reviews online. How does that make you feel?

Again, it comes down to our staff’s dedication to the art of hair styling. It’s not like it’s just me pounding away solo—not at all. Yes, I want the experience to be great; I want customers to be happy! But I know each of my employees genuinely shares the same desire. I am incredibly grateful for their hard work and dedication. They are the ones who make the Refinery what it is, and I couldn’t be more appreciative of them.

What excites you about the future of West Chester in the next five to 10 years?

It’s incredible how much the town has changed since even we first opened our doors. It is truly amazing. I feel very lucky to still be a part of the town and to have made it through the pandemic; many businesses did not make it. The town seems to be ever-growing. In addition, I am really excited about the art scene that’s evolving here in town. A couple of new galleries have popped up, and I am excited to see them thrive. It’s a very creative town, and I love that about West Chester.
