There is no doubt, our world has changed. Hopefully…this change is only temporary. As we all continue to navigate life within the “new normal,” we thought it would be a good idea to provide some practical tips to help you if you are moving in or out of an apartment during these challenging/strange times. Please note, we do not assume to be experts; not at all. This article is meant to act as a starting point to help get the gears of your mind moving to begin thinking of how you can safely move yourself and your possessions during this season.

Zukin Realty recommends that ALL tenants visit to the CDC website to review how you can protect yourself and others from the affects of Coronavirus. With that said here are some practical tips we have compiled based on CDC recommendations.
Moving During COVID-19
Be Sure to Wash Your Hands
Yes, it’s a HUGE deterrent from catching something. The CDC recommends that you wash hands often, especially when in contact with others. Wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If you don’t have a quick access to washing your hands, use hand sanitizer. Here is a great video illustrating how to wash your hands effectively, ensuring your hands are fully clean.

Spread Out Your Move
If you’re moving in with roommates, it’s probably a good idea to stager your move so that you are limiting how many people you are in contact with who have not been apart of your circle since quarantine restrictions were put in place. This simply requires organizing your move with your soon to be “roomies” so that everyone is aware of what you’re trying to achieve. If you can stick to the time frames that are agreed upon, it could make significant difference.

Clean and Disinfect
Rest assured, your apartment has been fully cleaned prior to move in. Nevertheless, since people are going to be helping you move and will be traveling in and out of your living quarters, it’s best you clean and disinfect your rental property after you get settled in, especially frequently touched surfaces such as:
- Sinks
- Tables
- Door Knobs
- Phones
- Faucets
- Toilets
Also, not all cleaning products pack the same punch as when dealing with a virus. Be sure to check the recommended cleaning products the EPA has suggested for combating COVID-19.
Wear a Mask
Wearing a mask is an easy and effective way to help keep yourself and others healthy. Just like going to the grocery store, everyone who enters your apartment should be wearing a mask and should keep it on until the leave. No exceptions. This simple step can greatly reduce the spread of Coronavirus, keeping you and your roommates safe and healthy. And if someone is sick who is planning to be a part of your moving party, they should stay at home and not be involved in the move at all. It’s the best way to help everyone avoid getting sick.
